Until now it has only been possible for companies to register up to 20 domain names under the top domain .no.  The reason for fixing such a limitation was to avoid speculation in domain names and hoarding.

Many owners of Norwegian trademark registrations have received correspondence from a company that calls itself "Varemerkeorganisasjonen AS". The communications concern offers to "renew" existing trademark registrations in Norway. The company's home page contains offers to both "register" and "renew" trademarks by filling in a form and paying a fee.

Norway became a member of the European Patent Convention on January 1, 2008. When filing a PCT application for national patent protection in Norway it is important to notice that filing an EPO application will not cover Norway, unless the PCT application has been filed after January 1, 2008.

A new Nordic Patent Institute, NPI,  will be operational as of January 1, 2008. The Institute is a cooperation between the patent authorities of Denmark, Iceland, and Norway. NPI, which will act as a PCT Authority, has been established to "maintain  and enhance the patent competence and services of the national patent offices in the NPI member states." On June 11, the Norwegian Parliament decided that Norway will join the European Patent Organisation as of January 1, 2008. This means that patent protection in Norway may be obtained via a Europan patent application after said date. Norway may only be designated for European patent applications filed after January 1, 2008. All PCT applications filed before January 1, 2008 will follow the traditional national course towards a Norwegian patent. More information on the amendment will follow shortly.

The Norwegian Government has decided to work towards a Norwegian membership in the European Patent Organisation.
 

As one of the last countries in Europe, the Norwegian Governement has decided to start a process intentionally leading to a Norwegian membership in the EPO. A hearing has been arranged this summer and will now be followed by the political process normally leading to a ratification of the European Patent Convention in Norway, most likely in January 2008.

The Geneva Act is a system for international registration of design, and the Act opens for a simpler way of filing a design application in several countries at the same time. In practice this means that you file one application, but designate which countries you wish the application to be filed in. Today, the Geneva Act consists of 17 member countries, and the number is increasing. The applications will be handled nationally in the designated countries, under the national Designs Acts.
Norway was expected to join the Geneva Act in 2005.

An increasing problem for copyright holders, of popular music and feature films in particular, has been that copyrighted works have been uploaded illegally to the Internet and downloaded by individuals. A countermove from the record industry has been to include copy protection on CDs. A regulation aimed at protecting copyright holders was incorporated in the EC Copyright Directive and included in the EEC Treaty in the summer of 2004, with the effect that Norway had to incorporate the regulations in their national legislation.

Oslo Patentkontor AS filed a complaint regarding a third party registration of the domain name sandisk.no to the Norwegian dispute resolution body last year. On January 19, 2005 the decision was made that the domain name must be deleted on the grounds that the registration was made in bad faith.
